Historic Grove Park Gets New Direction

Fractional resort ownership is the wave of the future for the cottage community experience. Individual cottage ownership has become too expensive except for those inheriting or independently wealthy. Also, today's busy families do not have the time to devote to the upkeep and maintenance of a second property. Enter fractional resort ownership.

Grove Park Cottage Resort, situated on Muskoka's Lake of Bays opposite Bigwin Island, is initiating this new direction. Thirty acres of beautiful, exclusive property rights are enhanced by the glorious views of sunsets and occasionally the northern lights. All is in place to begin building Phase One of the development with seven new cottages.

The history of Grove Park dates back to the early 1800's when it was recorded to be an Indian trading post. The Algonquin people used Grove Park as a hub for social and economic activities.

Circa 1850, the property was acquired from the Canadian government and a boarding house was erected. The guests included the clergy who are responsible for the founding the chapel still operating as Norway Point Church. Hand hewn logs representing the original one room cabin have been uncovered in the living room of the building now identified a the Lodge. It is reported that as many as fifty cabins dotted the many acres of the resort.

In the 1920's, Grove Park was fashioned to supplement its new neighbour, namely the famous Bigwin Inn. While Bigwin Inn was under construction, labourers were imported from Scotland to do the stonework at Casa Loma and at Bigwin Inn. These man stayed at Grove Park where part of their rent was to build the living room fireplace which is still functional. When the luxurious Bigwin Inn was in full swing for the rich and famous guests and celebrated entertainers, it is rumoured that at midnight conclusion of dry festivities, many revellers hopped aboard launches headed for the party at Grove Park. If the walls could only talk!

In the 1950's the addition of a general store on the street level and a dance hall upstairs staged many entertaining events for the guests and neighbours of Grove Park. The federal government designated Grove Park as a postal station and mail was delivered by the boat. Just recently the current owner bought occupation rites and will be revitalizing the dock area as soon as possible.

Fractional resort ownership will revitalize the resort which had been dormant for the last twenty years. Conjure up big band music, formal attire, gracious times and mix with the wild and crazy times that all transpired at Grove Park.
