1950's
(click photos to enlarge)
The "Jolly Giant was recently appraised by a
marine surveyor, whose comments are noted below.
"The engine is original and
is a high output, twin carburetor
Gray marine unit. It has had its exhaust
manifold re-welded and may
contain other serious symptoms which will
probably require its
rebuilding.
- Wooden structure of the hull, decks
and interiors appears to be in
very good condition. The bottom was
sheathed in fibreglass to the
waterline.
- Hardware and equipment are
complete and original and in good
condition. Much will probably polish to
a very good finish. Little
will require re-chroming.
One of the seat
cushions has suffered raccoon damage. The second seat is
undamaged and
original to the boat. There is no cover or trailer.
From the owner...
"Re the boat's history, we have owned the property since 1975. Shortly after that date, the grand-daughter of the original
owner stopped by - asked to see the old boat, and told us a few stories of how she and her siblings were taken for rides by
their grandfather. An 84 year old 'gent' in the neighbourhood also relates stories of the boat from the '50's. From 1963 to
1974 there were three other owners of the property. The boat is at Island Grove on Lake Simcoe and was likely built by
Grew when they were located at Jackson's Point. There continues to be a marina at this same location.
We took the boat out onto the lake a few times, just for the fun of it, after purchasing the property, but because of the damage to the
engine we did not use it beyond that. It has been stored in the boathouse up and out of the water.
The boat is currently lying at the south end of Lake Simcoe.
