Golden Nugget is a 2005 replica of a 1908 Ventnor Gold Cup Racer

History

The original was a 1908 Gold Cup Racer designed by Adolph E. Apel and built at his Ventnor Boat Works. In 1913, a boat of similar design, and built for T. Coleman Dupont, was the first recorded boat to exceed the mile-a-minute mark (60.3 m.p.h.).

The Ventnor boat works was established in 1902 and located in Ventnor, New Jersey. Some of Ventnor's designs were: "Miss Pepsi V", "Tempo VI", "My Sin", and many others including Malcolm Campbell's "Bluebird." The Ventnor name continues on stylish Art Deco boats to this day. This "Golden Nugget" is named for my junior Gold Cup Hydroplane of the same name, which I campaigned in the late 70's and early 80's.

Paul Dewhurst/Golden Era Classics, built this mahogany planked boat for me, utilizing the original 1908 plans and modern construction techniques with the planking being cold molded/vacuum bagged. It was then shipped to my auto/marine repair shop located just north of Cincinnati, in Ross, Ohio.

The Boat arrived with the inside clear finish completed. The bottom was painted and the engine was installed on aluminum rails. The exterior color and clear finish were applied at my shop, The Carriage Shop. The three coats of automotive clear were sanded first with 1500 grit, secondly with 3000 grit sandpaper, and then buffed and polished.

We installed vintage style instruments and the necessary wiring. We also installed all hardware that is either chrome plated brass or polished stainless steel and attached with polished stainless fasteners. The boat is enjoyed on weekends on the Ohio River or at boat shows around the country.
