Congratulations to master builder Kevin Fitzke of Minnesota, USA, on the creation of his Gentleman’s Racer “Bug Bite.” We have featured Kevin’s work in an earlier post when the boat was under construction in his shop. Since then, Kevin has launched Bug Bite successfully. Enjoy the photos, his comments and the brief video below.
Additional notes from Kevin:
“Bugbite is a little under 17′ in length and is 5′ on the beam. It’s has a pretty dramatic chamfer on the chines and step which create an illusion of a small free-board. As for speed, I’m not entirely sure how fast this boat will be. From what I’ve been able to find in the old Motor Boating magazines and such is I believe this boat broke the speed record at 69 mph in 1940. However, it’s a little confusing if it was this actual design or if it was a early Ventnor three-pointer design. Either way I’m not looking to try to break any speed records, I just think it’s got some great lines to the design and I’ll have plenty of fun at cruising speed.

Wooden boats excite the Muskokans!
Many thanks to our secret sleuth for discovering this recent wooden boat activity on the Muskoka Lakes.
Got into Port Carlng early yesterday and met up with the owner of Boomerang; a 27 year old 29.5 ft. torpedo hull built by Van Dam Boats in Boyne City Mi. This wonderful boat has book matched mahogany planking that is flawless today. The boat is beautifully balanced and leaps out of the water like a ballerina. She is a masterpiece in her own right and a tribute to Baby Bootlegger. I love this picture because if you look carefully at the hull you can see the other side of the lake reflected on the side of the boat; Now that is a mirror finish!!
…Out on the water yesterday with my boat.
Had some fun up on Lake Rosseau and Lake Joseph dodging the rollers thrown up by 30 to 50 ft race boats with various engine configurations. They had one thing in common; lots of horse-power! They came complete with a Helicopter for filming. It was quite a sight!.

Incredible new Gentleman’s Racer debuts at Blackbird Boats.
Congratulations to Paul Hunter and his staff on the completion of this amazing 23 foot Blackbird GR (Gentleman’s Racer). The racer has been water tested and is back in the shop for some fine tuning. The 600 horsepower, 588 ci, 8 cylinder Roush Marine engine pushes the boat to a plane in about two seconds flat.
The cold molded, fifteen layer epoxied hull is coated with an additional layer of fibreglass for abrasion protection. The boat offers enhanced features such as an electrically operated engine hatch lift, a retractable water ski pole, mooring cleats and even bow light among it’s many custom features.
The GR will seat three in the main cockpit and two in the forward “mother-in-law” compartment.
The GR project, which can be ordered directly from Blackbird Boats, took about six months to complete. It’s difficult to imagine a more spectacular Gentleman’s Racer than the Blackbird GR.
